    Studied geology-palaeontology at the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz and the Eberhard Karls University Tübingen. Diploma 1987 in Tübingen with a thesis on Pleistocene artiodactyls from the Rhine gravels. Doctorate in 1991 at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität, Bonn with a dissertation on "Melt microstructure in the incisives of Old and New World hystricognathous rodents". 1991-1996 research associate at the Institute of Palaeontology, Free University of Berlin. 1992 and 1993 Postdoc at the Institut des Sciences de l'Evolution, Université II in Montpellier, France. 1993 Fritz-Franck-Förderpreis of the German Society for Mammalogy. 1997 Habilitation at the Free University of Berlin with the habilitation thesis "Dryolestidae (Dryolestida, Mammalia) from the Upper Jurassic of Portugal". 1997-1998 Research assistant at the Philipps University of Marburg. 1999-2004 Heisenberg fellow of the German Research Foundation. March to June 1999 visiting scientist at the American Museum of Natural History, New York. 2003 appointment as associate professor at the Free University of Berlin. 2004-2005 Max Kade Fellow at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History in Pittsburgh, PA (USA). 2005-2006 Section Head Mammalogy at the Senckenberg Research Institute in Frankfurt am Main. Since 1.10.2006 Chair of Palaeontology at the University of Bonn. Vice President of the Palaeontological Society (since 2009). 2013 Appointed Visiting Professor at Shenyang Normal University, Shenyang, China.
